Achieve Smoother, Healthier Skin with Advanced Scar Treatment

At Azura Clinic, we offer Subcision, a minimally invasive procedure designed to treat depressed scars, particularly rolling and boxcar scars. This technique involves using a specialized needle to break up the fibrous tissue beneath the skin, promoting natural collagen production and improving skin texture.

What is Subcision?

Subcision is a procedure that uses a needle to probe under a rolling acne scar. The reason why subcision is effective for rolling scars and not for other types of acne scars is that in rolling scars, fibrous tissue strings extend from the skin to deeper tissues, resulting in dimpling of the skin. The goal of subcision is to break those fibers. Acne.org

The movement of the needle under the skin separates the scarred skin from the deeper tissues that are pulling the scarred skin down. The needle also causes a controlled injury so that a blood clot forms under the scar. The blood clot takes up space under the scar and eventually is replaced by new collagen, helping to level out the skin. Acne.org

What Subcision Does (At Azura Clinic, Adapted from Best Practices)

  • Using a sterile, fine needle (or Nokor needle or cannula) under local anesthesia
  • The needle is inserted under the depressed scar and moved in a fan‑motion to sever the fibrous/tethering strands that are pulling the skin down.
  • When the scar is released, the skin lifts naturally, tiny blood clots form and the body’s healing process triggers collagen remodeling and new tissue fills in over time.

Benefits of Subcision for Scar Reduction

  • Effective for Depressed Scars: Particularly beneficial for treating rolling and boxcar scars.
  • Stimulates Collagen Production: Encourages the formation of new collagen, improving skin texture.
  • Minimal Downtime: Most patients experience minimal recovery time.
  • Can Be Combined with Other Treatments: Often used in conjunction with fillers or PRP for enhanced results.

Who is a Good Candidate?

Subcision is suitable for individuals who:

  • Have rolling or boxcar acne scars.
  • Are seeking a non-surgical solution for scar reduction.
  • Are in good overall health and have realistic expectations.
  • Do not have active acne or keloid scars.

What to Expect During a Subcision Session

  1. Consultation: Our specialists will assess your skin and discuss your goals to determine if subcision is the right treatment for you.
  2. Preparation: A local anesthetic is applied to the treatment area to ensure comfort.
  3. Procedure: A specialized needle is inserted under the skin to break up the fibrous tissue causing the scar.
  4. Aftercare: Post-treatment instructions will be provided to ensure optimal healing and results

What to Expect: Results & Timeline

  • Some immediate effects: when the tether is released, you might notice a slight lift of the scar due to swelling. But real improvements (texture, depth) appear over weeks to months.
  • Typically 2–4 sessions are needed for moderate scars. Sessions are spaced about 4‑6 weeks apart.
  • Full results often develop over 2‑3 months as collagen remodels.

 Side Effects & Downtime

  • Bruising and swelling are common and expected. They usually fade over 3‑7 days.
  • Mild pain or tenderness in treated area for a few days.
  • Risk of hyperpigmentation (especially for darker skin tones) if aftercare is insufficient.
  • Possible bleeding, minor hematoma under skin. These typically resolve.

How a Session Works (Detailed Steps at Azura Clinic)

Here’s a likely protocol you can describe to clients:

  1. Consultation & Skin Analysis

  • Assess scar type, depth, skin tone, any medical issues (e.g. bleeding risk).
  1. Prep & Numbing

  • Cleanse the area thoroughly.
  • Apply local anesthetic (topical or injected) to reduce pain/discomfort.
  1. Subcision Procedure

  • Use a sterile Nokor needle or cannula.
  • Insert under scar, move side‑to‑side or fan‑motion to release fibrous attachments.
  • Possible audible “snap” when bands break.
  1. Optional Add‑ons

  • Sometimes combine with PRP or platelet gel for faster healing/combo effect.
  • Or combine with other therapies (microneedling, laser) depending on scar severity.
  1. Aftercare in Session

  • Clean and apply soothing serum or dressing.
  • Apply cold compresses to reduce swelling.
