Nail Fungus Treatment in Muscat
A thick, yellowed, crumbling nail is one of the few skin problems people live with for years before asking about it, usually because they assume nothing can be done. Something can, but the order matters: at Azura Clinic in Sarooj, Muscat the nail is examined by a specialist dermatologist first, because the single most common reason nail treatment fails is that the nail was never fungal to begin with.
Not Every Damaged Nail Is Fungus
Several different things produce a nail that looks infected, and they need different treatments. Antifungal treatment applied to a nail that has no fungus in it will do nothing for months, which is time and money spent for no reason.
- Nail psoriasis can give pitting, thickening, oil-drop discoloration and lifting of the nail. It looks remarkably like fungus and is treated completely differently.
- Old trauma. A nail that was crushed, or one under constant pressure from a tight shoe, thickens and distorts permanently without any infection present.
- A green or black-green nail usually points to a bacterial problem rather than a fungal one.
- Lifting of the nail from its bed has its own list of causes, including over-aggressive manicure cleaning under the nail.
- ⚠ A dark brown or black streak running along the length of the nail, especially a single nail, is not a fungal pattern and should be examined before anything is applied to it, for the same reason we give on our mole page: most are harmless, and the point of looking is to be sure.
Why We Confirm First
Fungal nail treatment is measured in nail growth, not in weeks, which means a wrong diagnosis is expensive in time more than in money: you can finish a full course and only then discover the nail was never going to respond. So the consultation starts with the examination, and your dermatologist will tell you whether a nail sample is worth taking to settle it before treatment begins. That one step is the difference between a plan and a guess.
What the Treatment Does, and What the Nail Does
This is the expectation that matters most, and it is rarely explained properly. Treatment acts on the fungus. It does not repair the damaged nail, because the nail you are looking at is already dead material: it cannot heal, it can only be replaced. So the sequence is that the infection is cleared and then the nail has to grow out from the base before it looks normal, and nail growth is slow, slower in toenails than in fingernails, and slower again in older patients and in cold weather.
Which is why nobody should promise you a clear nail at your next appointment, and why photographs taken a few weeks apart show very little. Thinning and cleaning the nail at the clinic helps the treatment reach what it needs to reach, and it also makes the nail look and feel better in the meantime. How long your own nail takes, and how many visits that means, is set out for you at the consultation rather than sold as a fixed course.
Why It Comes Back, and How to Stop That
Reinfection is the usual reason a successfully treated nail is thick again a year later, and almost all of it happens outside the clinic.
- The skin feeds the nail. Fungus between the toes or on the sole will reinfect a clean nail. Treating the nail and ignoring the skin is half a treatment.
- Shoes hold the fungus. Closed shoes worn daily in this climate stay warm and damp inside. Your dermatologist will tell you how to deal with the shoes themselves, which matters as much as what goes on the nail.
- Shared wet floors. Gyms, pools and mosque ablution areas are where most feet pick it up, so slippers in those places are not fussiness.
- Pedicure tools. Unsterilised instruments move fungus between clients efficiently. If you have salon pedicures, this is worth asking about.
- Nail polish over an infected nail keeps it sealed, warm and damp, which is the environment the fungus wants.
If you have diabetes, poor circulation or reduced sensation in the feet, tell us: a fungal nail matters more in that situation and the plan is more careful, including what we would rather you did not do at home.
What It Costs
The treatment is nail fungus treatment, 45 OMR to 125 OMR. The figure follows how many nails are involved and how thick they are, so it is confirmed after the nails have been looked at. If the skin of the foot needs treating as well, that is discussed at the same visit.
